Completely new to game. Ignore white box for first few games?

I find it fascinating that many suggest ignoring the white box initially! Leaving it alone feels like ignoring fnaf in the office and hoping for the best. What unique challenges do you all think this approach presents? Could it make the game feel too overwhelming for new players?
